HistoryThe health hydro is a Victorian Grade 2 listed building at a cost of £10,000 to buildThe 1889 ordinance survey map shows the site as open land. quite possibly small fiends, a market garden or a park. there was open fields to the south east, and it was otherwise surrounded by residential development. the building opened in 1981/1982, and housed two swimming pools Turkish baths washing baths, a mixture of different medical consulting rooms and a dispensary.the health hydro was designed to supply health care to the members of the great western railway and their families, via its medical fund society, the society was set up in 1847 in response to the pressure from workers who suffered industrial injuries and whos communities had been ravaged by illness, the society based its head quarters at the site and continued to own the premises until 1987 when, under threat from developers, the site was brought by the then Thames down Borough council as a community health facility. For years the Victorian building has reputedly been stalked by a ghost called ARTHUR, who is said to walk the corridors at night and he likes to move papers around, he was assumed to be the companion of an un-named woman who is also rumoured to speak to un-wittingly people in the building. One member of staff in 1991 remembers the encounter with a ghost he claimed that he was locking up the building when he heard a polite female voice from behind the door saying “what are you doing here” he told a local newspaper you know when you get a cold shiver that runs up your spine? well that's what happened to me. I was not overly keen to meet her a muffled voice said something again but I didn't catch it, I also didn't want to hang around to find out what was going on.Other experiences reported from this time included a strange knocks on doors, unusual smalls and scents and creaks and hearing of footstep's, lights being turned on and off when there was no other person in the building. The staff felt the ghost was dated back to WW2 when during WW1 the building was used as a hospital for the patients and what is now the changing room and Turkish bath resting suit was thought to have been the morgue. The Turkish baths has a lovely stained glass windows more than one of which in which the ladies baths featured a five pointed star suspended above a crescent an emblem familiar to modern wiccans. interested in the feminine mysteries it must be noted that the design element does not necessarily indicate that pagan iconography was deliberately incorporated into architecture, in fact the design probably refers to the components of the Turkish flag.In the early 1990`s the staff of the baths came attributed Arthur to a figure from a historical picture of the baths from the 1930`s. the local newspapers then the evening advertiser obliged by printing the picture, by the following week a reader had unearthed a better quality version of the photo which actually showed the ghost of Arthur to be a woman. The photo saga continued until more recent times, however, as one woman described `I used to swim at the baths in the early morning and evening, as I was in the local team , I was walking down one of the long corridors on my own once through a door across from the reception where there was a large picture on the wall and a little old man used to be in the picture some days and other days he was missing from the picture I told my team friends and we all looked at it together on more than once occasion they saw the same as I did he's rumoured to walk around the baths I never knew why he was there, although over the years Milton road baths has seen and heard many things.Today in the rest room area there is a surviving marble massage table as you walk though the door.
